Epagneul Breton Retrieving Woodcock

This featured art piece is a contemporary sculpture depicting the front profile of an Epagneul Breton retrieving a woodcock, produced by French sculptor JP. Couespel. This piece is designated as Number 6 of a limited edition produced by the artist, who is a resident of Paris. The date of production is 2007. This is verifiable because Mr. Couespel informally exhibited this work depicting the Epagneul Breton on the grounds of the Hippodrome in Loudeac, France at the Centenaire Celebration of the breed in August 2007.  As a result of that exposure, he sold a number of his works portraying the Epagneul Breton, including the featured art piece.

This excellent work represents the classic pose of an Epagneul Breton making a retrieve of a European woodcock, which is larger than its North American cousin. The name of the dog serving as the model or inspiration for the piece is not known. The form/ body of the Epagneul Breton is depicted in a coloration of light gold with very subtle orange hues interspersed which are noticeable upon close inspection. The carriage of the Epagneul Breton’s head is high, proud and triumphant in retrieving its quarry. This particular depiction of an Epagneul Breton further displays a well formed and prominent forehead (stop), and the desired three to two length of skull to muzzle ratio. The ears are set high on the skull, which is highly desirable. The dog is cobby, with the chest cavity well let down to the elbow and below the rib cage which results in a deep chest, as the breed conformation standard requires.
