“Moose”
- Epagneul Breton Bronze Sculpture
by Larry Costigan (2021)
This featured art piece is a contemporary bronze sculpture entitled “Moose” which was created and produced by artist and sculptor Larry Costigan of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The piece was produced during 2021, with the model for the piece being a male Epagneul Breton by the call name of “Moose.” The subject Epagneul Breton, whose registered name is CHF-L Maxime Confesseur de la Trinite TAN WRT, is owned by Josh Ruiter, who commissioned the bronze sculpture based on a favorite photograph taken of Moose on point during a hunt.
The artist grew up in Quebec, Canada and began drawing and sculpting at a young age. He was most fascinated with wild animals and dogs. His notebooks in grade school were filled with sketches and drawings of deer, elk, dogs, and the occasional caricature of a teacher. The artist did not go to university or formally attend Art School but entered the work force after grade school working for CP Rail, IBM, BP Canada and Suncor. When he was a few years away from retirement, he took a few basic courses to learn how to mix red, blue, and yellow. His first painting was of a friend’s Pointer. Eventually he moved from doing paintings to working in the medium of sculpting bronze. He is now retired and enjoys his art work as an avocation.
At the outset of his career as an artist, Larry Costigan formed the goal of his work appearing in Pointing Dog Journal and other hunting magazines. His acclaimed artwork has now appeared on the cover of Pointing Dog Journal and been featured twice in The American Field Magazine - Holiday Special Issue, in two-page features. The artist owns a Pointer by the name of Tilly, and is looking forward to her first bird hunting season this fall.
